The Star Trek 50th Anniversary Rewatch.

Over the course of 50 years, Star Trek has brought us 729 adventures from the final frontier. That’s counting Star Trek Beyond, which will arrive during the anniversary year. To rewatch them all is a serious undertaking … but that’s just what we’re doing. To celebrate the golden anniversary, the hosts of Trek.fm will take you through two installments of Star Trek each day—every day—for an entire year. In this episode of Hyperchannel, we introduce the project and how it will refresh you on half a century of missions, helping tie all the strings together to enrich your Star Trek experience.

Hyperchannel 93: Remembering Penny Juday

The Loss of Star Trek’s Longtime Archivist.

When we watch the Star Trek films and episodes, a lot of the props go by unnoticed—they've become such a part of a universe that feels real to us. But there are so many props involved in producing a single story—to say nothing of the franchise as a whole—and someone has to keep track of it all. For many years, Penny Juday did just that. Sadly, she passed away on December 19 of colon and liver cancer at the young age of 60. We take a moment to look back at her contributions to Trek.

Star Trek: Prometheus.

When it comes to novels, Germans make the best Star Trek covers. They really do. And now, German engineering is moving beyond the cover and onto the inner pages with Cross Cult’s official trilogy Star Trek: Prometheus. We take peek at these books coming in summer 2016 that will be written by Bernd Perplies and Christian Humberg, with covers by Tobias Richter.

IDW’s Starfleet Academy Series.

Speculation has been around for ages about a Starfleet Academy series. And with Star Trek heading back to television in 2017, could IDW’s new comic series, Starfleet Academy, be the harbinger of CBS’s plans? We discuss the overall concept, how it applies to comics, how it might apply to TV, and whether it’s good for the franchise or a misstep.

Hyperchannel 88: The Sound of Music

Star Trek: The Ultimate Voyage.

One of the most wonderful—and perhaps underappreciated—aspects of Star Trek is the music. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, CineConcerts—one of the leading producers of live music experiences performed with visual media—has put together a 100-city concert tour that will deliver favorites from The Original Series, The Motion Picture, The Wrath of Khan, The Voyage Home, Insurrection, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and much more. We run down what to expect and where to find the first performances of 2016.

Hyperchannel 87: Aron’s Kidney

Aron Eisenberg’s Donor and Funding.

We all come to love the characters on Star Trek and the actors who portray them, but we sometimes forget that they are regular people just like us. As such, they deal with the same problems that we do. Earlier this year, Aron Eisenberg, DS9’s Nog, suffered kidney failure. Fortunately a donor has been found and an operation is imminent. But that’s just the beginning. We share Aron’s story as well as how you can help him recover.

Star Trek Beyond to Get the IMAX Treatment.

Sure, you can go beyond, but if you’re going to do it, you might as well go big at the same time. Paramount Pictures, Skydance Productions, Bad Robot Productions, and IMAX Corporation are making sure you can do just that by applying IMAX DMR digital remastering to Star Trek Beyond. We share our experiences with the format and why this is very welcome news.

Abrams and Lindelof have expressed regrets over how they handled the plot points of Into Darkness prior to the film’s release. We share our thoughts on their comments and ask for yours.

Hyperchannel 84: The Star Trek Beyond Trailer

Breaking Down Our First Look at the Next Film.

Paramount, Skydance, and Bad Robot have teased us with some glimpses of the next Star Trek film in the form of a trailer designed to run before Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Complaint generator … ENGAGE! Reaction has been mixed, and the negative voices have, as usual, been the loudest. But if you dig deeply into what we’ve been shown, you can find a number of very intriguing elements that hint at a story that’s more TOS than anything we’ve gotten so far. Of course, it doesn’t seem that way on the surface. In this episode of Hyperchannel, we toss aside ship and crew and hop onto our motorcycle to ride—no jump— into the heart of the Star Trek Beyond trailer.

We all know that Dawson began her move from acting to directing while still on Voyager, where she directed "Riddles" and "Workforce, Part II." But after she retired the role of B’Elanna, her career behind the camera really began to soar. Over the past decade and a half, she’s helmed episodes of some of the biggest shows around. 2016 will be no different. We take a look at three big projects being added to Roxann’s resume.

The day we’ve been waiting for has arrived. Star Trek is returning to TV! The CBS announcement of a new Star Trek series, set for January 2017, has sent the fan base into a frenzy. Excitement and speculation have replaced the long-running fear that Star Trek’s television future was dead.

More perks. Easier access.

Trek.fm is made possible by our listeners. For quite some time now we've been looking at ways to better deliver perks and exclusive content to you. We've finally found the solution, and it’s called Patron Zone.

But what does that mean? In this episode of Hyperchannel, Trek.fm Executive Producer Norm Lao and Content Manager Will Nguyen (who happen to both have quarters aboard the NX-01), join me to talk about why they first decided to support the network, how they became so involved in what we’re doing, and how we can all take ownership of our fandom. We also give you a rundown of what our new perks system is and what it means for you.

Hyperchannel 78: Future Artistry’s Past

Today’s software makes it easier than ever to go from idea to canvas—or screen. Technology is wonderful, but it also means that a bit of what makes the art form of creating movie posters so special has been lost. We take a look at some rare Star Trek work by Spiros Angelikas, shared with TrekCore by his son Harry.

Also, anyone who has been to Star Trek: The Exhibition will tell you what a special experience it is. If you’re in the neighborhood of the Washington State Fair, you can have in seat in Captain Kirk’s chair and experience the thrill yourself … just get there before September 27!

Portal 47 Launches. Shatner Bio of Nimoy. Rod Roddenberry on Abramsverse.

Portal 47 Launches

Larry Nemecek—AKA “Dr. Trek”—recently announced his new behind-the-scenes boutique deep-dive fan experience called Portal 47—but he’s been coy about it—until now. For a year’s plan (or a three-month trial) you can accompany Larry as he delves into decades of knowledge about back-stage Star Trek from his own archives, memories, and rolodex of pro Treklanders. Fans at San Diego Comic-Con and Star Trek Las Vegas got an early-bird chance to sign up, but on Wednesday, September 9, he’ll kick things off officially—for them … and for anyone who comes aboard on this bonus maiden “telebriefing.” If you’d like to be part of the September 9 sample session, visit larrynemecek.com/Portal47Signup.htm. You can also find out more about Portal 47 on Facebook (just type Portal 47 into the search field), or sign up for Larry’s email list at larrynemecek.com/signup.html.

William Shatner to Write Leonard Nimoy Biography

When William Shatner failed to attend the funeral of Leonard Nimoy, those who love to fuel the idea that the two Star Trek leads did not get along took the opportunity to fan the flames. But the truth is the Shatner and Nimoy enjoyed a strong friendship that spanned nearly half a century. So it’s only fitting that William Shatner himself will pen a biography of his dear friend, to be released in 2016 by St. Martin’s Press.

Rod Roddenberry Talks About Star Trek’s Future

In a piece by Michael Hinman on 1701 News, Rod Roddenberry shares his feelings about the J.J. Abrams films. The headline reads “Beginning Of 2009 Film ‘Brought Me To Tears’,” but the article actually contains much more. The son of the Star Trek creator also talks about how he tries to carry on his father’s vision through the many projects that he supports, and also whether or not Star Trek will return to television.

Hyperchannel 71: Kirkstarter Cleared for Docking

Star Trek Continues Funding Campaign Final Days.

The fan-based, non-profit production Star Trek Continues is in the final days of its Kirkstarter 2.0, a campaign to fund at least two additional episodes of the series. The original goal of the campaign, which ends February 16, was to raise $100,000 to fund all aspects of their fifth and sixth episodes. Since they’ve already reached that goal there are ambitious stretch goals to build an Engineering set, a Planet Set, and to fund the creation of up to seven additional episodes.
