Find out if Luke Weir needs a brain transplant after summarizing all of the latest Star Trek news on this episode of Hyperchannel!

Star Trek: Discovery could have been delayed yet again by a seemingly inevitable writers strike from the WGA - thankfully, the guild and studios were able to resolve their differences, but on this episode we dive in to why the WGA was going to strike and how Star Trek has previously been affected by striking workers. Also, Star Trek Online recently debuted their Season 13 expansion, Discovery adds more actors and Leslie Moonves gives more insight into some of the inner workings of distributing the new flagship Star Trek series.

148: Revenge Is a Dish Best Served In UHD

4K HDR Wrath of Khan headed our way.

Many fans have been waiting for new prints of the Star Trek films, which have been looking increasingly rough with each release. If you own the Blu-rays, you'll know that these movies don't look quite like what you expected when you dished out for the newer, high-definition format. Paramount is starting to do something about that—at least with the most popular of the films, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Nicholas Meyer revealed on Facebook that a 4K Ultra High Definition (or UHD) release is on the way.

We share why we’re still concerned and why only the details of an actual plan will put the minds of non-American fans at ease.

143: Remembering Gary Hutzel

TNG and DS9 Visual Artist Dies at 60.

We’ve lost a lot of members of the Star Trek family over the past year, and it’s always sad. In many cases, we’ve lost those who worked on The Original Series, which is understandable as we’re now in the 50th year since that show premiered. But when we lose those who are much younger, it’s especially sad. And that’s the case with the latest loss, Gary Hutzel, who has passed away at the young age of 60. He died of an apparent heart attack, according to Hollywood Reporter. We look back at his contributions to Star Trek.

Diplomats, mysterious signals, and crash landings. They’re all part of Miasma, the latest eNovella adventure from Pocket Books, penned by Star Trek veteran Greg Cox. Spanning just 99 pages, the compact thrill ride finds the landing party stranded on a hostile world—unable to communicate with the Enterprise—while Captain Kirk and Saavik race to save the day. 132: Now THAT’S Dedication!

Eaglemoss Releases Enterprise 1701 Dedication Plaque.

The starships that British replica maker Eaglemoss has been making over the past few years are fantastic. If we could zoom inside one of those ships, we'd find a little dedication plaque on the bridge. Luckily, for key Federation ships, they’ve produced replicas of those plaques as well. You can already hang those of the Enterprise-D, Enterprise-E, Enterprise NX-01, Voyager, and the Defiant on your wall, and now you can add the dedication plaque from the original 1701 to that collection as well. We take a look at the replica Eaglemoss has created with with the help of Mike Okuda.

Star Trek Stays on Amazon Prime.

A while back we talked about the fact that Star Trek was leaving the Amazon Prime streaming service in February. Suddenly now the countdown that was being displayed in the Prime interface has disappeared, so it seems that departure is no longer imminent. Does this signal a change in tactic for CBS? It’s unclear. But it does look better for those who want to keep Trek on their favorite streaming service. We share our thoughts on the new development.

DS9 goes postal in Palau and Guyana.

Not all countries are as difficult to persuade as the United States when it comes to making unique stamps that honor pop culture. Star Trek stamps can be had from some unlikely sources. And the latest to be issued highlight Deep Space Nine. What's even more amazing is that they come from two different countries! We look at DS9 stamps from South America and the Pacific.

The name of his character is not yet known, but the story is about a boy, gods, monsters, and a magical suit of armor. We take a quick peek at the project, Takei, and the director.

Hyperchannel 97: Remembering Jason Wingreen

We take a moment to remember another of the Star Trek family who we've lost, prolific character actor Jason Wingreen, who played Dr. Linke in the third-season TOS episode “The Empath.” Wingreen was also the voice of Boba Fett in The Empire Strikes Back, and appeared in episodes are countless TV shows between 1955 and 1994. Cinema Blend has published a list by Adam Holmes that ranks every major Star Trek movie villain. In this episode of Hyperchannel, we go through the list and share our thoughts on the characters, their positioning, and what they brought (or failed to bring) to the Star Trek universe.

The Loss of Star Trek’s Longtime Archivist.

When we watch the Star Trek films and episodes, a lot of the props go by unnoticed—they've become such a part of a universe that feels real to us. But there are so many props involved in producing a single story—to say nothing of the franchise as a whole—and someone has to keep track of it all. For many years, Penny Juday did just that. Sadly, she passed away on December 19 of colon and liver cancer at the young age of 60. We take a moment to look back at her contributions to Trek.

Hyperchannel 84: The Star Trek Beyond Trailer

Breaking Down Our First Look at the Next Film.

Paramount, Skydance, and Bad Robot have teased us with some glimpses of the next Star Trek film in the form of a trailer designed to run before Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Complaint generator … ENGAGE! Reaction has been mixed, and the negative voices have, as usual, been the loudest. But if you dig deeply into what we’ve been shown, you can find a number of very intriguing elements that hint at a story that’s more TOS than anything we’ve gotten so far. Of course, it doesn’t seem that way on the surface. In this episode of Hyperchannel, we toss aside ship and crew and hop onto our motorcycle to ride—no jump— into the heart of the Star Trek Beyond trailer.

William Shatner to Write Leonard Nimoy Biography

When William Shatner failed to attend the funeral of Leonard Nimoy, those who love to fuel the idea that the two Star Trek leads did not get along took the opportunity to fan the flames. But the truth is the Shatner and Nimoy enjoyed a strong friendship that spanned nearly half a century. So it’s only fitting that William Shatner himself will pen a biography of his dear friend, to be released in 2016 by St. Martin’s Press.
